Information on IUS/IUD (Coil) fitting appointments

For coil fitting or replacement

Before the procedure

  • Continue with your current contraception
  • Take pain relief up to 1 hour prior to the procedure 
  • If attending for a coil exchange, please use additional barrier methods or abstain for 7 days prior to your appointment (in case there is any problem re-fitting)

After the procedure

  • Discuss with the clinician at the time of insertion, how long is required to abstain or use alternative methods of contraception
  • If you are able to check your coil threads and are unable to feel them, do not rely on your coil as contraception and contact the surgery
  • Side effects of your chosen coil will be discussed prior and following your appointment. If you experience any abdominal pain that is worsening, any unusual vaginal discharge, pain or bleeding during or after intercourse, please contact the surgery for a review.

For Coil removal

  • If you are not wishing to become pregnant, please use additional barrier methods or abstain for 7 days prior to your appointment and following removal of your coil.
